The War in Ukraine

Russia full-scaled invaded Ukraine in February 2022.

The Problem

The issue I am addressing is the war between Russia and Ukraine. Russia full-scaled invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Some causes include Russian territorial expansionism, geopolitical competition and dispute over Ukraine's orientation with Western powers like NATO and the United States. The existence of the problem is evidenced by the numerous cities that have been destroyed by conflict, the hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians killed, injured or displaced.

Who Is Affected

The most affected are Ukrainian civilians, especially because of displacement and death of loved ones. However, governments and economies around the world are also affected as Russia is a huge energy supplier and international cooperation is a necessity. The parties most concerned are the Ukrainian and Russian governments and citizens, NATO, and many US government bodies like Congress. Humanitarian groups and other European nations also play significant roles.

Why It Matters

This is a very serious problem. It is a war between two large nations that could very well escalate and have profound effects on global stability, economy, and security. People should care because in the modern world, it's hard to truly stay isolated. If the problem is not addressed, conflicts could continue and spread, which threatens many aspects of life that are essential to peace and security.

The Current Stalemate

It seems as if neither Russia nor Ukraine is willing to back down due to high levels of commitment to achieving objectives; thus, peace talks or agreements haven't been made. Additionally, international aid continues to be supplied to Ukraine and sanctions remain levied against Russia. These two factors keep the conflict in a stalemate of sorts with no clear or easy resolution.
